On my cross-country road trip with my dog, Kuma, I was making a stop in Tucson and needed a location close to Saguro National Park. DoubleTree Suites Tucson was the perfect place located near the west and east side of the park. It’s also located right next to the airport.
FIRST IMPRESSION
My first impression of this hotel was not great. When I walked up to the check-in counter, there was a man and a woman behind the desk. The woman did her duties and gave me all the necessary information for the hotel stay. The man did not greet me at all or even smile. He was very cold and it made me feel a little uncomfortable. It wasn’t the usual welcome greeting I was used to when checking into a hotel.
Once I got to my room, I started unpacking some things and took a look around the place. To my shock, there was a huge cockroach next to the bed. Luckily, it was dead, but it was still gross. I called the front desk immediately and they offered me another room.
It was a drag having to repack some things and move all my luggage to another room. It would have been nice if they would have at least offered to help or offer something.
Once I moved to my new room, everything was fine after that and I encountered a more friendly staff.
LOCATION
The hotel is in a great location close to many restaurants and activities. It’s right next to the airport, so if you have an early flight, this would be the perfect place to stay.
It’s also located near both ends of Saguaro National Park. The park is split into two sides on the east and west. Both sides are about 25-30 minutes from the hotel. If you only have time to visit one side of the park, I would go with the west side because there are way more Saguaros to look at. Plus, you pass by the beautiful Tucson Mountain Park.
If you’re a fan of In ‘N Out, it is located 10 minutes from the hotel on Ajo Way. There are also some other restaurants and attractions on that road including Starbucks and Dave & Buster’s.
THE ROOM
The room was very spacious and since it’s a suite, it was split into two rooms. The first room was the living room area with a sofa bed, dining table, huge TV, and wet bar. The decor of the couch and tables were a little outdated, but that didn’t bother me at all. I was just happy that there was a mini-fridge with a freezer and a dining table to eat dinner. I also used the dining table as a working desk. There was also a coffeemaker and microwave at the wet bar.
The adjacent room had a king-size bed, dresser, another TV, closet, and bathroom. There was also a cute little balcony. It was too hot during the day (in the summer) to open the doors, but the mornings were pretty chilly, so it was nice to let some fresh air in.
The closest had a large digital safe that can fit your laptop. Also inside was an iron, ironing board, and an extra comforter if you needed additional warmth. I always appreciate hotels that provide extra blankets and pillows because I often get cold and having extra blankets gives me peace of mind.
The bathroom comes with a tub and shower. I felt like this area was a little too crowded and they could have given more room here rather than the living room space. There were minimal toiletries provided including shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and a bar of soap.
AMENITIES
There is a nice courtyard and pool where I saw many families enjoying the facilities. I used the courtyard area to walk my dog around since there were patches of grass here. There are also some tables and chairs, so you could enjoy a meal outside if you wanted to.
The business center is located within the lobby and there are two computers with a printer.
WiFi is complimentary and worked perfectly fine while I was using it.
PET-FRIENDLINESS
The room was very nice for pet-friendly accommodation, but there was really nowhere to walk Kuma on the property. The front of the hotel only had concrete and rocks. I couldn’t find any grass for Kuma to walk around in. I eventually went to the courtyard to let Kuma relieve herself since there were patches of grass there.
Since the bedroom is located in the back of the suite, you don’t hear any noise up front near the door, which is great if you have a guard dog like Kuma. We slept in peace with no noise.
They do not provide any pet supplies, so make sure you bring your own dog bowl and waste bags.
HOTEL COST
I stayed here in early June while the pandemic was going on and things were slowly starting to open. I paid for the room with my Hilton points which was 23,000 points. The pet fee was $50, but it was waived because of the cockroach incident, so this was a completely free stay for me. They didn’t even charge me any taxes like Home2 Suites in Houston did.
If I didn’t use my points and paid the pet fee, the total cost would have been $150.
FINAL IMPRESSION
This was an average hotel stay for me. I wish the staff were a little more friendly here. It was mostly the afternoon staff that gave me bad vibes. The staff in the evening and morning were much nicer and a little more welcoming.
Seeing that dead cockroach in my room wasn’t nice, but at least they gave me a new room right away. When I checked out, I asked if they could waive the $50 pet fee for the cockroach incident and they did it without hesitation. I’m glad I asked for that.
TIP
Don’t forget to ask for your complimentary warm chocolate chip cookie at the front desk. DoubleTree used to offer these to you once you checked in, but now you can only get them if you request it. They are delicious, so make sure you ask for one… or two (like I did).
