My husband had to work in the Del Mar area for the Labor Day weekend, so the pups and I decided to tag along for the extended long weekend. We booked a comfortable and pet-friendly hotel at the Hyatt House San Diego, which is conveniently located in the Sorrento Mesa area.
LOCATION
The hotel is situated amidst a handful of office buildings, creating a unique blend of business and leisure in the area. This particular location in northern San Diego makes it a central hub with convenient access to various other parts of the city.
La Jolla Shores is conveniently located roughly a 20-minute drive southwest of the area, while downtown San Diego lies approximately a 35-minute drive south, although the travel time may vary depending on traffic conditions. Additionally, Torrey Pines State Park can be reached in about a twenty minute drive.
CHECK IN
We arrived at the hotel shortly after the official check-in time of 3 PM and were handed a piece of paper that contained information regarding the various amenities available on the property. I appreciate hotels that take the time to provide this kind of detailed information, as it truly does come in handy during our stay. The self-parking fee was $18 per night and we never had any issues finding a parking spot.
THE ONE BEDROOM KING SUITE
We booked the One Bedroom Suite King, which was a spacious and comfortable 575 square foot room. It featured a fully-equipped kitchen, a king-size Hyatt Grand Bed located in a separate bedroom area for added privacy, and a cozy living room that included a sleeper sofa for accommodating additional guests.
Entryway
The entryway was spacious, creating a welcoming atmosphere, and there was a large message board with an integrated mirror that proved to be incredibly useful for placing a variety of everyday items. We utilized the convenient clip on the magnetic board to securely hold our key cards and used the hooks to neatly hang the dogs’ leashes.
Bedroom
The bedroom was spacious and featured an ensuite bathroom, along with a window that offered a lovely view of the tranquil courtyard. Additionally, there was a large 42” flat-screen TV for entertainment.
I didn’t realize that Hyatt had their own branded mattresses until it was pointed out on their website. It turns out that the Hyatt Grand Bed is a luxury firm mattress equipped with innovative temperature-controlling foam layers, which enhance comfort. I can confidently say that the mattress was definitely one of the most comfortable beds I’ve experienced during my hotel stays.
Next to each side of the bed was a nightstand. However, one side was equipped with multiple outlets situated conveniently on the lamp for charging your devices, while the other side did not have this useful feature at all.
There was a clock that had its own outlets, so I decided to unplug it and carefully moved it onto my nightstand to utilize it for my devices that needed charging. I found it odd that only one side of the bed had all the necessary outlets for charging electronics.
There was a two-door mirrored closet, and it was there in that space that I found the luggage rack, along with some extra blankets and a pillow for the sleeper sofa.
Bathroom
The bathroom was a spacious and bright area that offered a refreshing atmosphere. The only toiletry provided was a simple bar of soap, which seemed somewhat minimal. I was surprised that there wasn’t a small bottle of lotion or even some cotton balls, both of which are typically considered standard amenities in most hotels. However, there were plenty of towels available for use, and I appreciated the fact that there were also an ample number of hooks available to conveniently hang our towels.
I appreciated the bright illumination provided by the ring light around the mirror, as well as the thoughtful addition of an extra roll of toilet paper for convenience. The water pressure in the shower was strong, offering a refreshing experience, and I loved how spacious the shower area felt. Additionally, I’m also a fan of sliding glass doors instead of traditional shower curtains, as they contribute to a more modern and open aesthetic.
The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash that I used during my stay were from a brand called Cleanse Well - KenetMD. The KenetMD Signature Collection is a line of personal care products that has been developed by Dr. Barney Kenet, specifically for Hyatt hotels. I truly appreciated the quality of these products, especially since they were free of parabens and other harsh, potentially harmful ingredients.
Kitchen
The kitchen was fully equipped with a full-size refrigerator, a stove, a dishwasher, and a microwave for quick meal preparations. The kitchen counter was not only spacious but also cleverly designed to double as a comfortable table for dining.
The one thing I absolutely hate about walking into a kitchen that isn’t mine is the frustrating experience of opening all the cabinets and drawers to locate the items I need for cooking. I really appreciated how thoughtfully they designed this one. There were little peek-a-boo holes in the cabinets, allowing you to easily see exactly where the dishes and cups were located.
There were plenty of dishes available, including a complete four-person dish set, as well as an ample assortment of cutlery, pots, and pans, which means you could easily prepare and enjoy a full meal here without encountering any trouble.
Living Room
The design of the living room was spacious, offering plenty of room for the dogs to wrestle and play together without any constraints. I really appreciated the overall layout of the design, as it was exceptionally well thought out to accommodate daily living.
On one side of the cozy couch, there was a long console table that had a lamp with convenient outlets. This arrangement created a fantastic spot to place our laptops and other miscellaneous items, keeping everything neatly organized and easily accessible.
At the foot of the L-shaped couch, there was a couch table, which was incredibly convenient when we wanted to enjoy a relaxed meal while watching TV. Additionally, a coffee table was available, with half of it being upholstered with a comfortable cushion. This dual-purpose table was particularly great for those moments when we wanted to use it as a foot rest.
The living room also had a spacious 42” flat-screen TV that displayed high definition TV channels. I wanted to watch a particular show on Amazon Prime and, fortunately, the TV was equipped with Chromecast, making this possible. If you’re not familiar with Chromecast, it is a small device that allows guests to watch their own content on a hotel TV.
Since we were located on the ground level, we enjoyed the comfort of a small porch that featured a small table and two chairs. Our room faced the serene courtyard and was nestled behind an array of lush bushes. This setup proved to be fantastic for our dogs, as we reveled in the pleasant view while also benefiting from a bit of privacy, all thanks to the thoughtfully arranged landscaping that enveloped our little corner of the property.
COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST
Complimentary buffet breakfasts can often be hit or miss, and to my pleasant surprise, this particular one turned out to be quite nice. I tend to judge a good breakfast primarily on how well the scrambled eggs are cooked, and in this case, they were fluffy and creamy, meeting my expectations.
The sausage links were delicious and I loved that they took the time to cook their bacon to a perfect crisp. I like my bacon crunchy. Alongside these items, there were other standard breakfast offerings such as oatmeal, fresh fruits, a selection of coffee, and more.
I was actually quite surprised to discover that there was miso soup and rice available every morning. Considering that we were staying at a Western hotel, I certainly wasn’t anticipating the presence of traditional Asian dishes among the breakfast options.
PET-FRIENDLINESS
The fee for bringing pets is $75 per pet, and the establishment is happy to welcome up to two pets per guest. While we did not receive any special amenities, I always make it a point to pack my dog travel bag whenever we go on trips.
There were two dedicated pet relief areas conveniently situated on the premises, but there were also plenty of other areas where I was able to comfortably walk the pups around the hotel. Since we were surrounded by a variety of office buildings, each featuring well-manicured grounds and sidewalks everywhere, our leisurely walks were not only enjoyable but also quite pleasant.
FINAL THOUGHTS
We had a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and we appreciated that the accommodations were pet friendly. The surrounding area was also quite accommodating for pets, which made our visit even more delightful.
We dined with our pups at Gravity Heights, a lovely restaurant that was conveniently located just across the street from our lodging. Additionally, we took the pups to the outdoor shopping center, Westfield UTC. This entire shopping destination is known for being pet friendly, and they even provide a fantastic dog park called the Bark Park.
I honestly can’t think of any cons about our experience. The room we had was a generous size, and it really felt like a wonderful home away from home. Everything in the room was clean and tidy, convenient for our needs, and the staff we encountered throughout our stay were all friendly and helpful.
