*UPDATE* The Admiral is now a Wyndham hotel

I have passed through Mobile, Alabama numerous times on many occasions, but had never stopped by here. I finally thought it was time to check out this city after all of these years even if it was only for one night. I was driving cross-country with my dog and needed a place to stay overnight around the area and The Admiral Hotel Mobile was the perfect fit.

ABOUT THE ADMIRAL HOTEL MOBILE

The Admiral Hotel Mobile is part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, which is a global collection of distinctive four and five star hotels. It’s also one of the Historic Hotels of America, meaning the hotel has maintained its authenticity, sense of place, and architectural integrity.

The hotel opened in 1940 and was formerly called Admiral Semmes Hotel named for Admiral Raphael Semmes, an officer in the Confederate navy during the American Civil War. During the war, he captained the CSS Alabama, a highly successful commerce raider. After the war, Semmes returned to Mobile, Alabama, and resumed his legal career.

In 2014, the hotel did a complete makeover with 150 updated guest rooms and 5 luxurious suites on the top floor. After completing renovations, the hotel re-opened as The Admiral Hotel Mobile, Curio Collection by Hilton.

FIRST IMPRESSION

Downtown Mobile is fairly small, so it was rather easy finding the hotel once I exited the interstate. I parked on the side of the road next to the hotel and went inside to check-in. The hotel lobby was beautiful with its oval-shaped balcony area topped with a chandelier, mirrored walls, and original Art Deco elevator doors.

I had the option of finding street parking myself or valet parking for $20 per night. I decided to go with the valet option since I’m terrible at finding street parking. The friendly staff helped unload my luggage onto the bell cart and took care of my car.

LOCATION

The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Mobile and it is a safe and clean area. There are two parks within walking distance, Bienville Square and Cooper Riverside Park, which were both lovely. There are also numerous restaurants and shops nearby along with attractions like the Mobile Carnival Museum, Fort Conde, and the History Museum of Mobile.

THE ROOM

My room was located on the 6th floor, which was great, but it was right in front of the elevators, which I wasn’t too fond of. It’s convenient to move luggage, but I usually like to stay in a room away from the elevators to keep away from the noise. Fortunately, I only heard some noise early in the evening and it was quiet for the rest of the night.

Standard King Bed Guest Room

I booked the standard guest room with a king size bed and it was pretty spacious. The room had an updated Art Deco-style design with two night stands, accent chair, side table, dresser/console, large flat-screen TV, a desk, Keurig coffee machine, and a mini fridge. The bed was very comfortable and out of all the hotels I have stayed at, I got the best night’s rest here. I definitely felt refreshed in the morning after sleeping so well.

I didn’t have much of a view, but I couldn’t see out my window anyway because there were some white patches on the window panes. The window was also cracked with a blue tape over it… not very luxurious, but again, I didn’t have much of a view anyway.

To the side of the room was a large barn door that led to a closet and a stylish bathroom. The closet was pretty dark and had several hangers, iron, ironing board, and a luggage rack. The bathroom was pretty small but had a large sink and counter area. The standup shower worked great and I like how they had the shower valve on the opposite side of the showerhead so that you didn’t accidentally get wet when starting the shower.

AMENITIES

Complimentary WiFi is provided and if you need a crib, they provide that as well. There is also a 24-hour fitness center, an outdoor pool, business center, and extensive meeting space, including a stunning ballroom.

There is an excellent bar and restaurant on the first floor where I really enjoyed my food and the outstanding service.

PET-FRIENDLINESS

The pet fee here is $50 per night and although they are a pet-friendly hotel, they do not provide any pet amenities, so make sure you bring your own dog bowls, dog bed, waste bags, etc. There are no grassy areas near the hotel, so I took Kuma out to relieve herself at a grassy area in front of another building close to the hotel. I also walked Kuma to Bienville Square and Cooper Riverside Park to get a little exercise. Both were within walking distance and about a 6-minute walk.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and I especially appreciated the comfortable bed and a good night’s rest. The hotel is located in a beautiful area and I loved walking around the parks with Kuma.
