Our stay at Sky Ranch Lodge in Sedona, Arizona was an unexpected surprise. We stayed here for one night as we made our way across the country from Los Angeles to Florida. Had we known what a gem this place was, we would have booked another night.
LOCATION
Sky Ranch Lodge sits 500 feet above the town of Sedona and has spectacular views of Red Rock Country. We were a bit skeptical of the location at first because the map showed the lodge sitting right next to Sedona Airport. In our experience, hotels near airports are typically a no-frills sort of stay, but the Sky Ranch Lodge was the complete opposite.
FIRST IMPRESSION
When we pulled into the driveway, we were surprised to see the richly landscaped grounds with gardens, trees, and ponds. The entire drive up the mountain was a lot of red and brown colors, so seeing so much green was a lovely welcome. Sky Ranch Lodge is often referred to as “Sedona’s best-kept secret” and we were beginning to see why.
The staff was friendly and it didn’t take long to get our keys. We had to provide our license plate number for parking, but none of the lots were assigned.
THE ROOM
We stayed in room 222 and the entrance was adorable. It was like we were walking into a home and not a hotel. The room was spacious and everything looked brand new. The decor was an updated rustic style that combined modern and farmhouse accents. Even the details in the ceiling didn’t go missing with the large wooden beams.
We read a review on TripAdvisor that the shampoo here was phenomenal, so when we took a look at the toiletries, we were surprised to see Paul Mitchell. I don’t know what we were expecting but we didn’t imagine that the best shampoo ever would be from Paul Mitchell. Not to say their products aren’t great. The bathroom was gorgeous and there were plenty of towels for two people. There was plenty of counter space for both of our toiletry and makeup bags.
Our room had a refrigerator and microwave, which is a huge plus for us. We like to keep our water cold and we use the freezer to store our reusable ice packs. We had two queen beds and we both slept through the night just fine. We were a little worried we wouldn’t get a good night’s rest with chatter outside coming from the swimming pool, but as soon as the pool closed at 9 PM, it was nice and quiet for the rest of the evening.
THE AMENITIES
Heated Salt Water Pool
Sometimes the pool area in hotels look uninviting, but the pool here was quite the opposite. Not only is it a heated saltwater pool, but the mini fountain waterfall really gave it a sense of serenity. If we had booked another day here, we definitely would have liked to spend some time in the pool.
Sky Ranch Lodge Wine Bar Patio
We didn’t grab any drinks here, but it’s a cute and cozy outdoor area. The bartender was friendly and attentive and we saw a couple of people here enjoying their drinks.
Lookout & Scenic Overview
The lookout was the best part of our stay here. We enjoyed sunset and sunrise views on the property’s lookout. You get stunning views of the red rocks and we even saw several hot air balloons rising up in the air during sunrise. The lookout is a private area for guests to enjoy, but if you wanted to get another perspective, you can walk a few more feet to the public Scenic Overview. We preferred our private view at Sky Ranch Lodge.
Mesa Grill Restaurant
Mesa Grill isn’t part of Sky Ranch Lodge, but they are affiliated with them, so make sure you ask for a discount card if you plan on eating here. It is located within walking distance from our lodge. You can actually see the restaurant from the lobby.
Mesa Grill is super pet-friendly with a special dog menu. The menu even stated that dogs would receive ice cold purified water and to personally call the manager if this service wasn’t offered. We’ve never been to a pet-friendly restaurant that took their pet diners so seriously. The service here was fantastic and the views outside were gorgeous; however, the food was pretty average. It wasn’t horrible, but also not something we would go back for.
PET FRIENDLINESS
Pets are welcome here, but they don’t provide any pet amenities, so make sure to bring your own dog bowls and treats. The premises had grassy areas and dog waste stations, but there were signs that said to keep the dogs off the grass. This was a little confusing because there weren’t other locations for dogs to relieve themselves, so it was impossible to ask Kuma to not walk on the grass.
HOTEL COST
We stayed at this hotel at the end of August 2020. The general cost for a standard room with two beds start at $147 and depends on the season you visit.
Parking is free and the pet fee is $25 per stay for one pet.

FINAL THOUGHTS
We couldn’t have asked for a better stay and it felt like we were miles away from civilization in our own private retreat even though we were in the heart of Sedona. We witnessed both an amazing sunset and sunrise and appreciated the cozy and spacious room.
