Amsterdam has always been on the top of our list of places to visit and we finally made it happen this year. We wanted to stay someplace that was central, convenient, and unique and Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam ticked all the boxes for us. Earlier this year, we had an amazing experience when we stayed at the Kimpton Fitzroy in London, so we were delighted to see that there was a Kimpton in Amsterdam as well.

LOCATION

The hotel is located right in the center of Amsterdam’s thriving city and just a short five-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Initially, we thought we would need to grab a cab from the station to the hotel, since we had luggage, but decided to walk once we saw how short the distance was on Google Maps. It was an interesting walk as we were guided through some cool alleys and saw a ton of little shops in between and made a mental note to check them out later.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

We were excited to be staying right in the city center with tons of walkable nearby attractions. The hotel was surprisingly modern which was quite the contrast from the surrounding area which had a beautiful old-world charm to it. The lobby was bright with a ton of natural light that came through the big glass panels that faced the bustling streets. We loved the quirky details like the track lights that were birds which you wouldn’t even notice unless you looked closely.

We arrived a little before check-in time, so our room wasn’t ready just yet. We didn’t mind waiting inside the hotel while our room was being prepared since there were plenty of places to sit and unwind. The front desk even offered us a drink at their Super Lyan Bar while we waited, which we really appreciated since we were definitely in need of some drinks after a long day of traveling.

THE ROOM

We were in Room 237 and had an awesome view of the bustling streets with trams going by. This might not be the ideal room for some guests as you will hear the trams going by but this did not bother us at all. We’d much rather have the view and natural light coming in than a darker room.

Our room was modern, trendy, and effortlessly minimal. We especially loved the bold blue tiles in the bathroom. Every accent piece was thoughtfully designed and placed which created a cozy yet stylish atmosphere.

Our beds were super comfy with luxe linen sheets and the mattress was a custom Kimpton Ultra-Comfort Mattress made by Hypnos. If you’re not familiar with Hypnos, they are a British brand that specializes in luxury mattresses. We had no idea until we looked them up and now we know why we slept so well. We adored the little accent chair next to the window and even enjoyed the Amsterdam themed books that were placed in the room.

We really appreciated the coat rack corner that had a bench and a full-length mirror. We utilized this corner a ton and the stacked circle trays at the end really came in handy to place little items like our jewelry, coins, phone, etc.

There was a Nespresoo machine with coffee pods and also a selection of tea bags. We just loved the pretty tea cups and the tin can the tea and coffee pods came in. There was also a fridge that was stocked with free water. We were given a number to call should we want more water and we definitely took advantage of this. We loved how their water came in a carton box and not a plastic bottle. We Googled the brand on the water box and found that Marie-Stella-Maris is a Dutch lifestyle brand that has a mission to provide clean water for everyone everywhere and they donate to water projects all over the world. Not only do they sell water, but also luxurious care products which we found in our bathroom.

Bathroom

We couldn’t get over how awesome the walls were in this bathroom. The colors and patterns were bold and had just as much character as the bedroom. There were two shower options: rain shower and handheld shower head. We were happy to see that we had options since we aren’t huge fans of the rain shower. The counter space was on the smaller side, but the mirror had a ledge on it that provided an extra layer of space that was much needed. All of the toiletries (soap, body lotion, shampoo, and conditioner) were from the same brand as the water mentioned earlier, Marie-Stella-Maris. We were also delighted to see that the toiletries weren’t in those little individual travel size bottles but in the refillable ones.

We noticed that there was a huge list of items that Kimpton offered for free or to borrow if there was something we needed that wasn’t already in our bathroom. We didn’t need anything but when we looked at the list, we were pleasantly surprised to see some items on there that we have never seen at other hotels we have stayed at. For example, the list included a curling iron, straightening iron, salon quality hair dryer, and even deodorant. We were pretty impressed with their extensive list.

Social Hour

Something we learned at the Kimpton we stayed at in London was their free Social Hour. Every night, every guest at Kimpton is treated to free drinks at the Super Lyan Bar. We just love this fun perk and think it’s also a great way to meet other guests in the hotel. We both enjoyed a glass of wine every night and all the bartenders were super nice.

DRINKS & DINING

There were a handful of dining options at Kimpton from light snacks to full entrees. In the mornings, you can grab some light bites and raw cold-pressed juices from the Super Lyan Garden and at night (or if you fancy a drink during the day) you can have some drinks at the Super Lyan Bar.

One morning, it was pouring rain and we had plans to have pancakes at a place just up the street, but to our surprise, the pancake restaurant didn’t’ open until noon. We had been up since 6 AM and couldn't wait six hours for our first meal, so we changed plans and decided to dine at the Wyers Restaurant inside the hotel.

The restaurant was a combination of American comfort food with Dutch influence. The setting was relaxed and we sat right next to the window where we had a great view for some people watching while we had a light breakfast. Crystal ordered the buttermilk pancakes and Candy had scrambled eggs and toast. We appreciated the fast service and took our time with our food and drinks while we waited for the rain to subside.

STAFF & SERVICE

The staff truly went above and beyond for us. When we checked into our first room, it was at the end of the hall and the room was rather dark and was facing another building. Even with all the lights on in the middle of the day, it felt like it was already midnight and we could barely see anything inside our suitcases. When we requested to change our room, Edward was more than willing to make this happen. Although there wasn’t a room he could switch us to on the first night, he made it happen for us on the second night of our stay. We weren’t able to get into our room until later in the evening, but we were happy to have a room that had more natural light and the view from our window was a 100 times better.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Each Kimpton is unique and we can tell that they take great pride in their individuality. The Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam is a charming boutique hotel with a ton of artistic flair and character. Every section of the hotel was vibrant, modern, and had a fresh approach to luxury. The lobby was often bustling with people, but the staff always looked so calm and collected. We were in Amsterdam-Centrum, the inner-most borough and historical city centre of Amsterdam, so we were right in the hub of all the action. We were able to walk to many nearby attractions and were just minutes away from the tram and metro stations. We can’t wait to stay and see what the next Kimpton has in store for us.
