We wanted to take a weekend road trip to the East Valley region of Phoenix with our dogs and were on a hunt for a beautiful Airbnb home that was also pet-friendly. We found a beautiful Airbnb Plus home in Mesa that was perfect for all of our needs and more.
Titled "A Serene Desert Oasis with Outdoor Dining Under the Stars”, the hosts, Nikki and Leighton Sweven, did a marvelous job decorating this two-story home. The spacious house can host up to 8 guests with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a 2-car garage, and a magical backyard terrace.
FIRST IMPRESSION
Check-in was a breeze and we were given the details a couple of days prior to our arrival. They have an easy system where you can enter through the garage or front door with a code.
As soon as we walked into the house, we were overjoyed with how lovely the place was. It was exactly like the pictures advertised on Airbnb. We loved everything about the decor and how they used one-of-a-kind furniture pieces surrounded by beautiful potted plants in each room.
We were welcomed with a hand-written note along with many welcome gifts including desserts, granola bars, and even a couple bottles of wine. That was such a special touch.
DOWNSTAIRS
The downstairs had a bedroom with a double bed to the left and to the right was a large kitchen, long farmer’s dining table, and a small living room.
We loved the spacious kitchen and it was well stocked with just about everything we needed including pots and pans, cups, glasses, dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, toaster, Keurig coffee machine, cutting boards and more. It was also great that they provided olive oil, butter, salt and pepper, and all those little things that usually are a necessity when preparing a meal. They even had a drawer full of extra items like ziplock bags, saran wrap, dog waste bags, batteries and USB chargers. The pantry also had an extra roll of paper towels and two cute dog bowls for the dogs.
We used the kitchen many times to cook breakfast and dinner. A couple of things that we needed and couldn’t find were a good cutting knife (for raw chicken) and a spatula to flip the eggs. We managed without these utensils, but it was a bit of a challenge.
The kitchen also had an Amazon Alexa speaker, but we never used it. Most of the time, we had on The Great British Baking Show on Netflix in the background.
Next to the kitchen was a bar cart that had various glasses for wine and cocktails. We used the nice wine glasses for the white wine that was gifted to us by the thoughtful hosts.
The living room had a comfy couch with a round coffee table and a unique furniture piece beneath the Smart TV that was made of old wooden crates. We watched some shows and movies on Netflix with the pups at night.
Next to the living room were French doors that led to the adorable backyard terrace. The yard was very clean and well maintained with bright green grass, an outdoor table, fire pit and party lights. We didn’t get to enjoy the patio much since it was cold at the time of our visit, but the dogs appreciated the nice yard. One extra touch we really appreciated were the dog waste bags placed by the door.
One of the bedrooms of the house was located downstairs across from the living room. It had a double bed with a chic and modern Bohemian decor. One of us was thinking about sleeping in this room, but quickly realized it was a bad idea because all the curtains were sheer. Although we didn’t sleep in this room, we took a lot of great photos in here with the pups.
The house also has an attached 2-car garage with a washer and dryer. We also found various cleaning supplies and an iron and ironing board in here. What we didn’t find until we left the house was the half bathroom that was located next to the washer and dryer. We didn’t need to use that bathroom since there were two full bathrooms upstairs, but if you were to stay in the house with 8 guests, that extra bathroom will come in handy.
UPSTAIRS
The rest of the three bedrooms were located upstairs. The first bedroom had two single beds with a cute corner that had a wooden bench and tree branch used as a clothing rack. It was such a cute idea.
Across the first bedroom was one of the full bathrooms with our dream decor. We absolutely loved this bathroom’s wall and floor tiles. Someday, we would love to have a bathroom like this in our own home. There were two very soft bath towels (better quality than most hotels we stay at), hand towel, Q-tips, hair dryer, body soap, shampoo, conditioner and even bath salts. The only thing missing was a wash cloth, but we brought our own, so it wasn’t a big deal.
The second bedroom had a queen bed and a Smart TV. It had the same minimal Bohemian decor with a vintage dresser to the side. One of us thought about sleeping in this room as well, but again, the curtains were sheer, so we felt like we didn’t have privacy.
We both ended up sleeping in the master bedroom with the king bed, walk-in closet, Smart TV and full bathroom. This was the only room that had real curtains where we could have privacy and block the light in the mornings. The bed was large enough to fit the two of us plus our small and medium dog. It was such a comfortable bed that we slept so well.
The bathroom in the master bedroom was nice and elegant with two separate sinks, which worked out perfectly for us. We each had our own space to place our things (and we have a LOT of toiletries and makeup, so this was wonderful).
We never used the shower in this bathroom because it was way too dark and we could barely see anything once we shut the curtains. You could probably see better in the mornings, but we both take our showers at night. Luckily, there was another full bathroom, so we used that shower instead.
This bathroom also had four soft bath towels, two hand towels, Q-Tips, hair dryer, body soap, shampoo and conditioner. There was also a bathtub pillow underneath the sink if you wanted to soak in the tub and relax. They provided luxury bath salts in both bathrooms and even candles to create the perfect oasis for your bath time.
LOCATION
The location was perfect for us since it was located only 30 minutes west of the Apache Trail, which we wanted to explore with our dogs. We highly suggest driving at least half of this scenic drive as there are lots of activities you can do like exploring the Goldfield Ghost Town, hiking at the Lost Dutchman State Park and taking in the gorgeous views at Canyon Lake.
There are also numerous shops, eateries, coffee shops and grocery stores nearby. Walmart Neighborhood Market, Walmart Super Center and Sprouts are all within a 5-minute drive from the house. For coffee, we really enjoyed The Fix and Dutch Bros, not only for their coffee but for their friendly service. Even the pups got a special treat with whipped cream and a doggie biscuit.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Sweven House is a true gem in the East Valley region of Phoenix. The entire house is full of thoughtful touches with a cute Bohemian style decor that we both fell in love with.
Nikki and Leighton were very responsive throughout our entire stay. All of our messages were answered within an hour and often within minutes. They encouraged us to reach out to them if there was anything we needed.
They really went above and beyond being wonderful super hosts. If we ever make a trip back to Mesa, we will stay at The Sweven House again in a heartbeat.
