I wasn’t originally thinking of staying at Amari Phuket, but I’m sure glad I did. My friend, Negin, found this beautiful hotel and it is a gigantic place close to the famous Patong beach. Patong beach is known for party-goers, so it can be a bit loud at night if your hotel is right on that street, but this resort was up on a hill away from all the noise which was perfect for me.

Amari Phuket is an hour away from the Phuket airport, so the hotel had a driver pick me up at the airport. I heard that getting a taxi at Phuket airport could be a nightmare, so it was great that I was able to find my driver right away and be on my way. I wanted to know a little bit about the area but I don’t think the driver spoke much English, so it was a quiet hour-long ride.

When I got to the resort at 9:30 PM, it was pretty chaotic. There were so many people gathered around the lobby area. I’m assuming this is a pretty popular hotel since it’s pretty fancy and in a great location for a great price. One of the staff members came up to take my luggage for me before I went to check-in at the front desk.

CHECK-IN

I booked a room with a balcony (a necessity for me these days), but when I went to check in, for some reason, they did not have the room for me and suggested I stay in a standard room for one night and then switch to the balcony room the next night. I was not happy with this and when they saw my disappointment, they happily upgraded me to a one bedroom suite facing the ocean at their Ocean Wing. The Ocean Wing is relatively new and was just built in the summer of 2015.

After I was given my keys, I was escorted to my room and to my surprise, we rode on a buggy. I had not done much research on the hotel before I arrived, so I had no idea how huge this place was or what it even looked like. We passed by large villas and I was getting excited about seeing my room.

THE ROOM

I arrived to a stunning room with a full kitchen, living room, dining area, a separate bedroom and a large balcony with an ocean view. It was basically a one bedroom apartment. I couldn’t believe all I was getting for such a great price!

On the bed was a cute straw beach tote, a flyer explaining all the hotel activities and a pillow menu. I have never stayed at a hotel where you get a pillow menu! There were several different pillows to choose from like the Ultra Soft Microfiber Pillow or the Natural Classic Latex Pillow or even the Buckwheat Pillow. I thought about calling for a different pillow just to see how different it would be, but I was so tired, that I just went straight to bed and forgot about it.

There were plenty of outlets, which always pleases me as I have so many things to plug in like camera batteries, laptop, chargers, etc. Additionally, their electrical sockets (220V) were adapted to fit different plugs commonly used in the US, Asia and Europe. I still used an international travel adapter and my Apple World Traveler Kit just to make sure it converts to the correct voltage.

There were complimentary glass bottles of water everywhere and it was replenished everyday. The kitchen came with all the necessary utensils, plates, cups, pots and pans. There was also a hot water dispenser and an espresso machine. The refrigerator was pretty much a full size. I like how it was almost hidden with it's sleek design.

In the closets were an iron, robe, umbrella, drying rack and a digital safe. I never use safes because I’m afraid I’ll get locked out, but this safe was super easy to use and there was plenty of room in it to fit lots of things like my laptop and camera. There was also a full size washer and dryer in a storage room right next to the front door.

THE SERVICE

I have mixed feelings about the service here. For the most part, I had outstanding service, but there were a few things that happened that kinda bothered me and my friends: 1) My reservation was not booked properly. 2) A lot of the things were not explained properly to us; for example, I was not told that I had access to The Clubhouse or had a full washer and dryer right next to me. I only found out because my friends knew about it. 3) The hotel’s shuttle service did not come to pick us up at the time that was promised and we ended up waiting for 2 hours and taking a taxi back ourselves.

With all that being said, the staff did everything they could to make up for these things. We were all upgraded to stunning ocean view rooms, we were given lovely gifts everyday like chocolates and appetizers, they bought us VIP tickets to the Phuket Simon Cabaret - Ladyboy Show and the general manager, Pierre, took time to talk to us and made sure our stay was the best it could be.

I also appreciated that they bended some of the rules. My hotel stay came with a couple of free meals at a specific restaurant, but even though I didn’t eat at that restaurant, they still credited my account with the meals I had at their other restaurants. That was pretty awesome.

THE AMENITIES

The amenities of this hotel were outstanding. There is just so much to do. You can literally spend the entire day just at the hotel with their activities and numerous dining options.

For starters, their Clubhouse was beyond amazing. They had a private infinity pool area with a gorgeous view and I always dreamed of swimming in a pool like this. They also had complimentary breakfasts and happy hours with buffets, appetizers and drinks. They had the cutest, yummiest little dishes like mini caesar salads, mini miso soups and mini chips and dip. Being Japanese, I love everything mini!

They have an endless list of activities. Just like a cruise, they put a flyer in your room everyday listing out all the events they have for the day. They offer special spa promotions, dinner theme nights, entertainment at bars, a kids club, Thai cooking class, complimentary shuttle to the mall and the beach, yoga classes, fitness classes and so much more.

There are 5 restaurants on property. The most popular one with breathtaking views is The Jetty. I didn’t have time to make it to this restaurant, but I wish I had because it looked so beautiful there. I did have a chance to have dinner at Rim Talay and really enjoyed the Asian cuisine there.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Although there were some hiccups on this stay, the staff quickly made up for it. You can’t beat the location, amenities and views of this place for the price. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone that’s planning on staying in the Patong area and would love to stay here again just to enjoy everything around the hotel for a full day.
