I was visiting Corfu, Greece for a few days and on my first day in Corfu, I planned to stay in Old Town. Since I did not have a car, I wanted to stay in the heart of Old Town so that I could be within walking distance to all the popular sites.
As always, I started my search for accommodations on Booking.com. This is my go-to site when it comes to booking hotels because its user-friendly interface and most places listed on the site offer the convenience of free cancellations. Typically, these free cancellation policies extend up to one to two days before the check-in date, providing a flexible option for travelers like myself.
After I booked my hotel in Corfu on Booking.com, I was offered a car service from the airport to the accommodation. This was the first time I saw car service being offered on Booking.com, so I tried it out and it worked out great. The driver contacted me via WhatsApp and was waiting for me at the airport when I arrived.
FIRST IMPRESSION
A day or two prior to your scheduled check-in date, you will receive a unique access code along with detailed instructions regarding how to reach the apartment. Additionally, informative videos have been provided that outline the route to the apartment as well. I highly recommend taking the time to watch the video, as it can help you familiarize yourself with the area.
Despite having the pinpoint location that was provided on Google Maps, I still encountered difficulty finding the place. My arrival was quite late at night, around 11 PM, which made it particularly challenging to navigate through the darkness. It is important to note that the driver will not be able to take you directly to the apartment, since cars are prohibited from entering the neighborhood areas of Old Town Corfu.
I contacted the owner of the apartment via WhatsApp and he responded right away. He assured me that he would meet me in about 15 minutes to show me the way to the apartment. Once he got there, he helped me with my luggage and before we went up to the apartment, he was kind enough to show me some of the restaurants and attractions around the apartment.
I’m so glad he came to help me because there was no way I was going to find this place without his help. The apartment is located on the 4th floor, so be prepared for stairs. Luckily, the owner carried my luggage for me up the stairs so that was a relief. Going down the stairs with my luggage was no problem.
Once we got to the apartment door, he showed me how to unlock the box with the code that has the keys to the apartment and then proceeded to show me around the apartment and how everything works.
There was a big container of water by the sink and he said that I could use that for drinking water or for anything else if the water runs out. He mentioned that they shut off the water sometimes in Old Town so that’s why he provides a big container of water.
THE SKY LOFT EXPERIENCE
There were many accommodations to choose from in Old Town Corfu but this one particularly caught my eye because of the large window panels above the bed and the stunning view from the window once you opened it. The window opens about a quarter of the way and you’re able to lean out to take in the beautiful surroundings of Old Town. I enjoyed my time in the room every morning relaxing with some coffee before I got my day started.
Upstairs in the bedroom, there is a TV, bench, closet with some hangers, and a couple of cozy extra pillows for added comfort. Additionally, there were conveniently placed outlets on each side of the bed for charging devices. I didn’t use the TV at all since I wanted to fully immerse myself in the soothing sounds of nature in Old Town.
Surprisingly, it was very quiet, with the exception of the occasional church bells ringing in the distance. The bed was quite comfortable, and I slept exceptionally well both nights during my relaxing stay.
Downstairs was a living room area with a couch, ottoman, adorable wooden coffee table, TV, and a convenient kitchenette space. The kitchenette was pretty well equipped with a variety of appliances, including a toaster oven, a refrigerator, a portable stove, a coffee machine, and an ample supply of dishes, cups, utensils, and other essentials.
As you make your way toward the bathroom located behind the kitchenette, you’ll come across a full-length mirror, a closet with hangers, a digital safe, iron, ironing board, and hair dryer.
The bathroom had a shower stall that worked well for the most part, but I got unlucky the first time I used it because I ran out of water. Since I had arrived late on my first night, I was not able to take a shower around 1 AM and that is when the town apparently shuts off the water. I believe they shut off the water heater as well because I was not getting any hot water and the water pressure was really low. Eventually, there was no water coming out of the shower head so I was not able to finish my shower.
The next day, I took a shower around 3 PM and everything worked perfectly fine without any issues. So if you decide to stay here, make sure you take a shower earlier in the evening rather than later, to avoid any potential inconvenience. Additionally, if you find yourself in need of extra water, rest assured that a large container of water is conveniently placed by the sink for your use.
LOCATION
The location of this apartment is absolutely perfect. It is literally within walking distance to everything. You’re right in the heart of Old Town, so as soon as you turn the corner, you’re immeresed in the lively neighborhood of little markets, stores, and cafes.
Right behind the apartment is a quaint little square known as Lemon Tree Square by the locals (at least that’s what the owner of the apartment told me) and there are a few restaurants that are great to dine at and stay open late during the summer. I dined at Artisti where I sat outside with a lovely glass of chilled local red wine paired with a delicious pasta dish.
Additionally, The Liston is just a quick 6-minute walk away, offering endless options of cafes and restaurants for you to enjoy. Right across the street from this bustling square is the historic Old Fortress. The New Venetian Fortress is literally right down the road, making it only a brief 3-minute walk from your doorstep. So yes, you truly have everything around you from this wonderful place.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, I truly loved my stay here and would wholeheartedly recommend this charming place to anyone who is looking to stay in the picturesque Old Town. There was a slight hiccup with the shower, but that was only because I had to take a shower late at night and I normally would not take a shower at that time.
The owner here is absolutely wonderful and truly a delight to chat with, and I can clearly see that he takes immense pride in both his property and the surrounding town. He repeatedly shared how friendly and trusting everyone is in the neighborhood, which I found to be very endearing and something I appreciated greatly.
