My Neighbor Totoro + Cafe = The Cutest Cream Puffs in Japan
Are you a fan of of the anime character Totoro or cream puffs? We are! That is why we went to this cute little cafe that was located slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Crystal found out about Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory on Instagram and we had to put it on our list of places to visit in Tokyo.
Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory is a small little bakery and cafe located in Setagaya. From Shinjuku, we took the Odakyu Line to Setagaya-Daita station, which is about a 20-minute ride. From there, it's a 5-minute walk to the bakery. If you have Google Maps, it's easy to find and you'll start seeing signs to TOLO, which is the cafe within Shirohige's Cream Puff Shop.
TOLO is the cafe and the dine-in area is located upstairs. The cafe has several pasta dishes, side dishes and coffee along with the popular Totoro cream puffs. If you would like to take home the cream puffs, the bakery is downstairs to the left when you walk in. We wanted to sit down and enjoy some coffee with our cream puffs, so we opted to dine in. It's interesting to note that if you decide to take the cream puffs to go, it's a little cheaper.
We were approached by a staff member and she explained that we can only dine in for an hour since there were reservations coming in around noon. We arrived at the cafe right when they opened at 10:30AM, but the place was already pretty much full. There are only about 7 tables and we were lucky enough to grab the last available table.
We sat towards the back of the room and ordered coffee, pasta, and of course the Totoro cream puffs. There were several different flavors to choose from: Custard & Cream, Chocolate, Chestnut and Raspberry & Cream Cheese. The flavors change with season, but the custard and chocolate are available all year long. We went with the classic Custard & Cream. Everything was absolutely delicious. Cream puffs have always been a favorite dessert of ours growing up. It's not too sweet and the custard inside the pastry is so yummy.
After we had our delicious dessert, we went downstairs to the bakery. It's a tiny space, but very popular with locals buying the Totoro cream puffs. There are also little Totoro cookies that you can buy as gifts too. Everything in here was so adorable!
After we left, I was curious as to how the bakery has the rights to create all things Totoro and later learned that the owner is the sister-in-law of the creator, Hayao Miyazaki.
Have we convinced you to visit this cafe in Tokyo?
