Coffee and Plants is an adorable 100% plant-based cafe that is fairly new to Old Pasadena and it’s already a huge hit. Their grand mission is to help the planet one cup at a time and we just adore the vibrant and inviting flowery ambiance.
They have a mission-driven concept like no other where they have partnered with the National Forest Foundation to commit to planting a tree for every 100 cups sold. The current count is at 327 trees. Way to go!
We are always searching for new cafes that are especially dog-friendly so when we came across Coffee and Plants, we immediately fell in love with all the fur babies on their Instagram feed.
First Impressions
Tucked away in a spacious brick-walled alley, the entrance definitely stood out when we entered the alleyway. We initially missed the entrance to the alley when we were driving around looking for parking (more on parking later) and eventually found it.
We arrived shortly after opening at 8AM and there was one other person sitting outside. The staff inside was still setting up, so there weren't any pastries out and the table settings outside were missing their flowers.
Not a huge deal since we weren’t in a hurry. Plus, this gave us plenty of time to take photos with our pups while we waited for the staff to finish setting up.
Coffee and Plants is the first 100% plant-based cafe in Los Angeles and they are super pet-friendly. Not only have they partnered with the National Forest Foundation, but they also donate a portion of their proceeds to abused and neglected animals in need.
We happened to meet the owner, AC, on our first visit and he treated Zooey to a delicious cup of coconut whipped cream topped with a vegan biscuit. We love that the pups are treated to healthy alternatives too.
The trendy cafe also offers drinks and vegan pastries from The Good Good Vegan Kitchen + Bakeshop during the week and on weekends they serve light bites.
100% Plant-Based Menu
We don’t go out of our way and seek establishments that are diet-conscious, so when we found out that the cafe was 100% plant-based, we were pleasantly surprised.
Specialty Drinks
Candy ordered a hot green tea and Crystal ordered the Americano. They offer a variety of specialty drinks like the superfood latte, rose bowl latte, or horchata, but we stuck to the classics.
I know, we should have been more adventurous, but that just means we’ll have to go back and try something new next time.
Pastries & Sandwiches
There are a variety of fresh vegan pastry options and we ordered a vegan croissant. The pastries are from The Good Good Vegan Kitchen + Bakeshop, which is a local bakery. The bakery began as a mother-daughter duo (from their kitchen) and has since expanded into a plant-based kitchen and bakeshop.
On the weekends, they also offer an Avocado Sandwich and a Noegg Sandwich. If you check out the menu on their website, the photos of the sandwiches look amazing.
Puppuccino
When you take a look at the menu, you’ll also find that they didn’t forget about your fur baby. We’re used to puppuccinos being your average whipped cream, but not here. Zooey was treated to a Coconut Whipped Cream Puppuccino topped with a vegan biscuit.
Decor Galore
It’s hard to resist leaving this place without a few photos. I mean the place was meant for it. Both the indoor and outdoor space is eye candy and for being a fairly small cafe, there were plenty of photo opportunities for both you and your pup.
We recommend going early if you want to snag a spot with ease. We hung out for a couple of hours and there was a steady flow of foot traffic pretty much the entire time we were there. We visited on a weekday morning, so we wouldn't be surprised if their weekends are busy too.
If you want to take home some of the cute plants, they are available for purchase. We saw these adorable pink mini plants that Crystal really wanted, but she had to resist since flying home with a plant isn’t really ideal. We’re a sucker for mini things.
There is also a handful of Coffee and Plants merchandise available, such as travel mugs, pins, and packaged coffee beans that are, of course, adorable.
Final Thoughts
We loved our visit to Coffee and Plants and were so happy that they were super dog-friendly. Although they were running behind setting up things for the humans, they already had a water bowl outside for the dog guests. We really appreciated this since Captain is always thirsty for water.
We also didn’t even realize their menu was 100% plant-based until the owner AC pointed it out to us. Initially, we thought AC was a regular that frequented the cafe since he knew so much about it, but as we chatted more, that is when we discovered that he was the owner.
He is really passionate about creating a welcoming space for both humans and their fur babies and of course coffee too. Thank you, AC for building such an aesthetically pleasing space for us all in Pasadena.
Parking
There is metered parking; however, snagging a metered spot can be tricky. The best place we found to park was at a nearby garage called the Schoolhouse Parking Facility. It’s free to park here for the first 90 minutes and then $2 for each additional hour with a $6 max.
